Kati grinned, turning. “Who knew you could be polite?” she mused, scooping Dolly up under her arm and resuming the trek.

“So?” Kati prompted, halfway up the steps and trying not to look at the ones still left to climb. She was already short of breath. “Lottery numbers...?”

I’ll tell you them later. Psychic visions need the right kind of environment.

“Don’t talk to me about visions,” Kati muttered, thinking of the dreams that had followed her into sleep, taunting her with Theo’s absence and guiding her to his secrets.

“Nearly there,” she panted, mostly for her own benefit. Her legs were burning, her back aching after all the activity in the catacombs, not to mention this damn climb.

This is pathetic, Kati, Dolly sighed. You need to do cardio more often. And I don’t mean—

Lalala, Kati thought loudly, drowning out Dolly’s next inappropriate comment.

“Finally,” she breathed, reaching the landing at the top of the stairs and staggering through the doorway. She set Dolly onto the floor and holstered her wand so she could rest her hands on her knees, her chest piercing with every puff of breath and her legs like jelly.

You need to exercise, Dolly snorted.

“And you need to stop sneaking into the kitchens to steal hamburgers but here we are.”

Dolly made a sound in the back of her throat; it was phlegmy and scornful, a Dolly speciality. She stuck her nose in the air and trotted off without comment, leaving Kati victorious.

When she’d caught her breath, Kati straightened, finding her legs stronger. Shaking ash off her clothes, she set off in the direction of the female dorms, thinking of the Supernatural History assignment she had to finish before tomorrow evening. People gave her odd looks as she passed—she looked like a ghost, but unlike the specters who walked the halls of SBA, she was solid, not incorporeal—but they couldn’t seem to tell who she was, so those looks didn’t come with the usual fear or hatred people shot at Kati.

She had her head down, so focussed on getting to her dorm and sprinting into the shower, that she totally missed Mr Worth as they passed each other.

“Kati?” he asked quietly, catching her arm.

Glancing up, a grin stole across her face as she met his brilliant blue eyes. “Hey, you.”
